Stretching and Conditioning with Martin Robinson

Can you touch your toes?

It is not enough to build muscle and do cardio fitness because you will luck flexibility. Stretching is necessary to help you to protect muscle elasticity for day-to-day tasks. You should introduce stretching in regular basis to gain full benefit. Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, healthy, and you need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Moreover, when you call on the muscles for activity, they will be weak and unable to extend all the way. This puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage. Healthy muscles also help you with balance problems to avoid falls.

The idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming, but you do not have to stretch every muscle you have!

The areas critical for your mobility are in your lower body, calves, hamstrings, hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh, shoulders, neck, and lower back.

Stretching is necessary to warm up the muscles and prepare them for an activity, otherwise you might damage you them. If you exercise first, you will get blood flow to the area, and that makes the tissue more pliable to change. You will only need 5 minutes of quick walking to warm up your muscles. You must make sure to be able to hold your stretch for at least 30 seconds without bouncing.
